Those who have desk jobs know that it is not healthy to sit in front of a computer all day. It is bad for your muscles, eyes and even your arms/hands. In recent years, there has been a lot of awareness raised about the dangers associated with sitting all day at a desk. You might have even heard of the phrases, ” Sitting is the new cancer” or ” sitting is the new smoking”.  Here is an excerpt from the Austrailia government’s better health channel about the dangers of sitting all day for your job. https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/HealthyLiving/the-dangers-of-sitting?viewAsPdf=true

In addition and more particularly if you are using a mouse or a keyboard all day, you can develop carpal tunnel syndrome. According to OrthoInfo, “Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that causes pain, numbness and tingling in the hand and arm. The condition occurs when one of the major nerves to the hand — the median nerve — is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist. “.

Raising awareness is the first step in prevention and treatment. Is it enough? Even though people know it is bad for them, they still have to do it. It is their job. What if there was a device that notified the user preemptively about bad posture? Like the Fitbit or Apple Watch does when you haven’t had a walk in a long time.

There is a kickstarter called precure that is looking to develop a wearable device that will measure your MLI (muscle load index)  from your elbow from a sleeve. This can be used by athletes, desk job workers using computers or anyone that does repetitive tasks with their arms/hands. The data from the wearable gets transmitted via Bluetooth to a smartphone app and the app is connected to a cloud service that does some analysis of the data.  Based on the results of the data, the user is notified if a correction needs to be made to avoid injury.
